Legal Aid

We are now taking January, 2020 bookings for legally-aided mediation. All legally-aided mediation takes place at our meeting room in Bristol. With ever-tightening criteria, it is best to check if you would be eligible. Please call or email us to book.

Not only does the mediation process cost a fraction of solicitor fees, but if you do want to begin court proceedings to settle separation/divorce matters, you will normally have to prove you have tried mediation.

"Unlike going to court or arbitration, family mediation recognises that you are the experts about your own family and leaves the decision-making to you.”  FMA

Family Mediator Bath understands that during times of family breakdown, when finances may be uncertain, finding an economical solution is beneficial for everyone involved.

The Money Advice Service (2017) outline that the average cost to negotiate a financial settlement, with a solicitor can "range from £2,000 to £3,000 for a negotiated financial settlement, up to £30,000 plus VAT or more for a financial application that goes all the way to a contested final court hearing. Costs will depend on whether you are trying to decide on care and support for your children, or to sort out your finances, or both. It will also depend on how much you and your ex-partner can agree between you and how complicated your circumstances are. ”

Solicitor fees relating to divorce: “Total costs range from £2,000 to £3,000 for a negotiated financial settlement, up to £30,000 plus VAT...” The Money Advice Service

WE CAN HELP YOUR FAMILY
ABOUT SHIEL MACMILLAN - OUR INDEPENDENT FAMILY MEDIATOR

Shiel qualified as an independent Family Mediator in 2003. Since then, he has utilized his 20 years of experience as a family lawyer to helps families resolve their differences.

Being an experienced mediator, Shiel enables the process to be less confrontational, with an emphasis on building communication as parties come to an agreement.

Shiel mostly completes MIAMs online, using Skype, allowing him to help more people, from a wider area. However, he does offer in-person MIAMs at his base in Larkhall, Bath.

Please note, legally-aided MIAMs and mediation meetings are held in our bases in Bristol and cannot be offered over Skype.

If, after your MIAM, mediation is deemed a viable option for your situation, a mutually acceptable location (usually close to, or between where both parties live) would be agreed upon between all parties involved and mediation meetings would commence.

Shiel also offers video-conferencing mediation meetings for child arrangement mediation. This is helpful for those who don't live near their ex-partner or who would prefer the convenience of this method.

Please head to our booking page to book your MIAM or contact us to find out more about our services.
